Are ALL Resin Concrete Polishing Pads Equal?
Most of us in the polishing pad world have had to experiment with polishing pads of one kind or another. Some have asked what the difference is between all of the diamond polishing pads out there. Concrete polishing pads all have the same diamond powder mesh size ranging from 30 grit up to 8500 grit. The main ingredient is what holds the diamonds in the pad, that is the resin.

Concrete polishing pads are mainly made up of epoxy resin.
Epoxy resin is used to make concrete polishing pads because of its inherent quality to withstand high heat. Although most concrete polishers use diamond polishing pads dry on industrial floors and commercial concrete renovation projects, there are those who will use these pads wet. When used dry, the polishing pads create friction and heat. The epoxy resin holds the diamonds in the pad as the contractor grinds and polishes the concrete surface. As the resin wears down and is removed the new sharp diamonds are exposed. If the pad is made of an inferior material, or made improperly, all of the diamonds can fall out, and when examined under a microscope the pores are left empty where the diamonds used to be.
It is important that one uses the proper Concrete Polishing Pad for the application.
If one uses a granite polishing pad that is usually made for wet applications, the pad can leave marks on the concrete. This usually discolors the concrete and makes for an undesired outcome. I must interject by saying that there are some phenolic pads that do work dry and do not burn up and glaze over. However, let the professional concrete polishing contractor beware, although it may be tempting to use the lower priced pad, is it worth the extra time spent on corrections?
